The Batavia Friendship Club met at the Batavia Baptist Church on May 6. There were 15 ladies present. We enjoyed a potluck lunch together.The Mexican decor was hosted by Patricia Wray, Betty Marrow and Josephine Perry.

Thursday’s meeting of the Harrison City Council committees saw discussion of a dangerous and prolific weed pervading the region — hemlock. The city is looking at options for controlling the spread of the plant on city properties, working in consultation with Boone County Conservation District.

Attorneys for Rocky Dodson, 54, have filed a motion to suppress in Boone County Circuit Court. Dodson was arrested in March 2022 with a warrant stating probable cause for murder in the second degree. The charge of murder came after investigators examined the circumstances of the death of his wife, 36-year-old Amanda Dodson.

At least a couple times each month, I hear a group of veterans discussing the catch phrase, “Thank you for your service.” None of them seem to like hearing it and most say it makes them feel awkward trying to come up with a response. In fact, in my very first column some 4-1/2 years ago, I talked about this issue. Responding with “you’re welcome” to a stranger seems wrong somehow. I have tried several responses, but they all seem too little or like I am taking credit for something I don’t deserve. I finally settled on just smiling and nodding my head.
